Tell me how, given the randomness of combat, you are going to notice when in the multiple fights you get that 1 extra hit in? Not only does it not matter the most, as most feats can accomplish for more over a campaign than multiple entire fights do, let alone a single hit, but it rarely matters at all. Monsters are bags of hit points and the little bit of extra damage, especially if there are multiple creatures, isn't going to change anything unless you get lucky and that extra hit just coincidentally comes when it has few hit points left. Yeah, none of that matters even as much as the extra hit in 5e does, and that rarely matters at all. Prior editions used different rules and mechanics. 1 hit in 1e or 2e had a greater impact than 2 or maybe even 3 attacks in 5e. The weakest red dragon in 1e had about 40 hit points. A single hit for 8 points of damage was close to 20% of its hit points. Even a wyrmling in 5e has 75 hit points, which is nearly double. The strongest red dragon in 1e had about 50 hit points. Only 2/3 of the wyrmling, and the strongest red dragon in 5e has 546 hit points. Bringing up prior editions is apples and oranges at best. It matters the least. In 1e and 2e that extra +1 took out a far greater percentage of a monsters hit points. 1 point of extra damage against the 1e weak red dragon is 1/40 of its hit points. In 5e it's 1/75. Against the strongest red dragon in 1e it's 1/50. In 5e its 1/546. In 3e that +1 was required just to not fall fatally behind the curve. In 5e it's not even noticed. I don't know about 4e, but I doubt the 5e +1 mattered more there, either.
