I never said that there were zero rolls lower than 8 or higher than 15, though. In fact, I literally noted that the median value for the highest ability score among the sets of six scores was 16 and the average was 15,78, which requires that some of the highest scores had to be higher than 15. What I did: 1. Use the online roller to roll 4d6-drop-lowest six times. 2. Recorded the rolled scores in order from highest to lowest to match the array order. 3. Repeated Steps 1 and 2 until I had 50 sets of 6 scores (300 scores total). 4. Calculated the average and median value for each position (highest score, second-highest score, etc.) 5. Posted the calculated averages and median values. Admittedly, I don't mingle with too many people outside of my regular DnD group, but this is the first time I've heard anyone say that that section can be interpreted as anything other than having to decide between rolling or using the array, then using the six numbers you got from the method you chose. Personally, I don't see how "If you don't like the idea of randomly determining ability scores" can be read as "if you don't like the randomly determined ability scores", which would allow for substitution after the fact. I could maybe see some wiggle room since it says "you generate your character's ability scores randomly", but then says "if you don't like [...] randomly determining", but seems like a stretch of a reading. There is even less that allows this to be read as being used after rolling. Since it says "use this variant for determining your ability scores", it clearly replaces any instructions that you would read from the "Determining Ability Scores" section.
