Sure, having areas of incompetence can be fun for some people. And Grog was a ton of fun to watch. But you seem to have missed the point. Let's say that everyone by pure statistical chance rolls 14, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10 (after mods). Therefore every party member can be good at one stat. According to you, we will have a balanced party experience. But here is the reality of that situation.

Barbarian with 14 Con? They aren't good at fighting, they aren't good at skills, they aren't good in the social pillar of play. They are good at not dying when hit with an attack (kind of)
Fighter with 14 Str? They are good at fighting, they aren't good at skills, they aren't good in the social pillar of play. They, like everyone else, will also be bad at taking hits, but since they are melee this is worse.
Rogue with 14 Dex? They are good at fighting and they are good at skills, they aren't good in the social pillar of play.
Wizard with the 14 Int? They are good at fighting, have some skills, they aren't good in the social pillar of play.
Cleric with the 14 Wis? They are good at fighting, good at some important skills, they aren't good in the social pillar of play.
Warlock with the 14 Cha? They are good at fighting, not so great at non-social skills, but very good in the social pillar of play.
So, sure, you can say the Fighter is good in combat and can shine there.... but EVERYONE is good at combat, except for the Barbarian who is good at NOTHING. Skills? Not good at them. Social Pillar? Not good at them. But look at the Cleric or Warlock or the Rogue? They can be good at combat AND other things. I'm not saying be omni-competent (though, that is how most literary characters are) but I AM saying that having only a single good stat can be a really heavy burden, because if your only good stat isn't the right one, it drags you out of participating effectively. Yes, Travis loved Grog, because he loved playing someone who was a lovable idiot and terrible in social situations. But not everyone wants to play that. Not everyone wants to play a mage who is clumsy, weak, socially inept and sickly but a genius. Sometimes we want to be good at more than one thing.
