So, the wizard can do anything with spells, and the Barbarian still has combat. Question, how is the game divided up? Answer: The Three Pillars of Play Question: How many Pillars of play use combat? Answer: One of them Question: How Many pillars of play use skills? Answer: Two of them Question: How many pillars of play utilize spells? Answer: All of them So, both the barbarian and the wizard are good at combat (wizard usually altering the entire course of combat with their spells) and the wizard can use spells in exploration or social encounters... and the Barbarian just sits around waiting for something heavy to need to be moved, or to have a combat. This is an IMMENSELY common critique of 5e DnD, of all editions of DnD, and we can see that a big chunk of it is tied up right here in the ability scores. If you only have one ability score that can contribute, then you back off at any other point in the game. And the point I'm trying to make, is that from personal experience, everyone having higher scores doesn't ruin the game. It doesn't make it boring. It doesn't make it so that no one has any unique contributions to make. What it DOES do is make people more likely to step outside of their single lane. Which is immensely helpful for characters and concepts that are otherwise only finding use in combat, where everyone is contributing, and being sidelined when combat is over.
