Well, I personally don't, but I pull that quote out when someone posts about extreme sanctity concerning the rules (a trait associated with the Kick-in-the-Door style, also described on page 8 of the DMG). ;) My personal style is In-Depth, which seems like DIST from the outside, although it's usually more rules-laden than the Core to begin with. It goes with the concept that the rules define the parameters of the world, and thus the rules very much effect RP because you are playing a character within the world which has been defined by them. For instance, defining Spider as Fine, Tiny, Small, Medium, Large, etc., is insuffient for the In-Depth because Spiders don't just come in different sizes. Hours of research on the web (no pun intended) is spent researching different Spiders, their environment, how they hunt/trap, lair, etc., and thus dozens to hundreds of Spider types are then developed. For the DM, it's hard work. For the Player, it's loaded with suprises because the next 8' wide Spider (a vibration sensitive, pouncing trap door spider with paralytic poison, jump and high Strength but poor AC due to body bulk) will likely have nothing in common with the last 8' wide Spider (a web-weaving trapper with deadly venom and high AC due to sleak shaping and higher Dexterity but less likely to hit due to its dependancy on web-trapped prey and lower Strength). And that's just looking at Spiders; Let's not even get into Horse Breeding, the Expert Class or mapping. But then, that's just how I have fun. :D
