Is InDesign more versatile than QuarkXPress?

Well, I'm still learning it, but it's doing everything I expect of it so far.

Making PDFs though, is super easy and is light years easier than Quark. For this alone I could see myself switching to InDesign.

Both InDesign and Quark just came out with new versions. InDesign is $200 cheaper and runs natively in OS X, which are two deciding factors for me (OS X nativism being paramount).

And what's the learn ratio with it? Is it a smoothe transition going from Quark to ID or is there a LOT of learning involved?

I'm a Quark freak who uses it for regular word processing because I'm so comfortable with it, so the learning curve was virtually nonexistent.

There are things here and there that I personally like and dislike about each but there aren't any show stoppers.

Whatever your decision, don't let learning curve be the decider--if you're already comfortable with Quark you're good to go with InDesign.

Mac platform!

:D

We use Adobe Indesign, Photoshp, Illustrator. It's easy to create PDFs with the company that created it.
We also use Adobe After Effect for video authoring and FormZ (autodessys) for 3D mapmaking.

Heh, I use Quark for WP as well. I've been using it for going on 8 years now and anything else feels so... annoying to use.

Actually, I was asking because I'm looking to make a carreer move in the near-to-intermediate future and I wanted to see if I was going to be behind the learning curve if someone asked if I could work with InDesign. Looks like I can comfortably say "Yes I can!".

I am glad to see this post as I am currently taking page layout and design using Quark in college. I have both Indesign 1.0 and Pagemaker 5.5, but cannot afford to get quark at the moment. I have toyed around with InDesign and my wife knows pagemaker pretty well and I was curious as to wether I would need to get Quark for high-level, professional quality layout.

Thanks Abashima for the comments on InDesign. I will have to get down and dirty with it now since you are switching over after years of Quark. Makes my life easier :)
