d20 CONAN / HYBORIA

There's been a lot of blood kicked up lately over the subject of Conan and Hyboria, so we've devoted an entire group to it. Hyboria-specific rules, home campaign background, new weapons/feats/PrC's, etc.

Mongoose publishing purchased the rights to Conan so we expect a d20 sourcebook out next year.

Just signed up for it a couple of hours back. I am eagerly awaiting the Mongoose version, although I have already scammed a ton of material from Vincent Darlage's site. I was just brushing up on the original Conan novels, amidst work on the Black Company d20 project and the Judge Dredd d20 website and upcoming storyhour.

Those conan stories are great. The original ones by REH are good quick reads because he was writing them as short stories for wierd tales at the time. THey make for great little adventures in a d20 Hyboria/Conan world.

How's the Black Company stuff? Is there a discussion group?

I basically just stick to the original Conan stories and the early pastiches. I really enjoy the dark and grim short stories over the novels as far as Conan is concerned.

And yes, there is a discussion group for the Black Company on Yahoogroups. I have tried for quite a while to contact Glen Cook to get permission, and have also written to Tor books, who never have written back to me. Therefore, I am just going ahead with the project with a disclaimer.

I like it dark and gritty too, kind of like the "From the Ashes" Greyhawk, but the players in general HATE dark & gritty. I'd rather be actively playing in a less-dark version of Hyboria than not playing at all, so I compromised in my campaign. It's working out too well, I've got 9 players now!

When I first would bring it up on newsgroups or to people at conventions, too many players were saying crap like, "Isn't Hyboria a low magic, non-intelligent, no-culture, dirty-desert planet with no world plotline?" Players also seem to think that only Conan exists on Hyboria and since you'll never be as cool as Conan that there's no point in playing. I love to kick those people in the head with the facts :)

I love when people think that Hyboria is low magic. Yea, it so low magic that there's a high level wizard in EVERY story. It's a given that there's more magic in Hyboria than in the Froghopping Realms!

See you on d20 Conan. Say, I'll get the word out about the Black Company discussion group too.

One product I'd consider absolutely essential to running a Conan/Hyborian Age campaign, or a campaign in that style, would be a little book called Sorcerer and Sword from Adept Press. It's for their Sorcerer RPG, but it's chock full of the best advice for running those kinds of games I've ever seen.

It tells you, for starters, how to build plots like those of the Sword & Sorcery stories, and how those differ from more tradtional adventure formats. You really have to read it to believe how good it is.

Thank you for the information. I really enjoy the d20 Conan group and have already found useful information from the list.
