The Draxxus Nebula Originally, this region of space was deemed too hostile for Terran life to allow exploration. Early probes were lost completely, and later survey ships returned to inhabited space on autopilot filled with dead crew members and maddening logs of sickness and demented ravings by the recorded crew. That wasn't terribly important for the first 900 years of space exploration by humanity, since the galaxy had provided many habitable planets in several different direction of space from Earth. None of the major "trade" routes even came close to the nebula. A breakthrough in technology allowed many sleeper ships to be retired for true faster-than-light travel. But the crucial transuranium element required to power the drives was incredibly rare, with most stars having barely a thimble-full scattered throughout its entire system. Humanity's expansion hobbled along until 150 years ago, when Dillon Rax and Xerxes Verus innocently turned their foundation's radio telescopes toward this area of the sky from the edge of inhabited space to examine stellar phenomenon ... and found the nebula brimming with the legendary material. Due to a transmission error, the finding was filed with EarthGOV under a conglomeration of their names - DRaxXus. The nebula was soon renamed in "his" honor and a modern goldrush ensued. Countless thousands of lives have been lost since, as people and crews pushed beyond their endurance to harvest the wealth. Many consciously traded physical deformities and mental incapacities for the untold wealth as they recovered the FTL element from this hazardous region. The nebula itself restrained FTL travel within it, until roughly 5 years ago suitable energy fields were designed that could penetrate that veil for traveling and which even dampened the debillitating effects on the body and mind. The nebula began to be deeply penetrated. Humanity seemed on the cusp of a true golden age of expansion. Then we found the Phleshem, moon-sized plant-like creatures that thrived on the ambient "atmosphere" of the nebula. Early investigations uncovered a collecting effect by the plants and stores of tremndous concentrations of the element within. Mining colonies were soon formed to take advantage of the source under the plants' "bark". But the creatures were sentient, and the mining soon made them quite angry....
