[d20 Future] Moving Planets

At what Progress Level in d20 Future could you see societies being able to move planets around?

I think that it might almost be outside the technical realm for PL 7, but maybe late PL 7. More likely it'd be possible in PL 8, and for certain PL 9.

I'd like to hear other's opinions on this.

I'd propose that a sort of 'shell' has to be constructed to accomplish this. The shell would provide bright illumination during what is supposed to be the day. It would provide low illumination, with tiny bulbs simulating stars during what is supposed to be night. All industries hooked up to a shaft that goes staight out into the vacuum of space. A system for filtering air and controlling the wind. Hmm, about tidal affects, that would somehow have to be based on some sort of gravitic induction, providing a push and full, to simulate the seasons. Also an airlock to allow the technical folks to do repairs on the outside of the shell, and allow for land to air to space (air to space) travel.

Just my thoughts.

Move a planet or move a planet safely? If you just want to change a planet's orbit you could do that at a much lower PL. Heck, with enough nukes we could probably do it today. Now if you want to keep the planet entirely intact then I don't think there's a PL high enough covered in D20 Future. We're talking ringworld-type technology at that point.

Well, I know there's a set of Star Wars books out there that speaks about this - though the titles escape me at the moment. They basically talk about using giant replusor engines to move the planets - kinda interesting ideas, but they don't really dive into it a whole lot.

I would honestly say that it would be late PL 8 or PL 9 that this should be possible, though expensive and not very common - maybe due to how slowly a "moving" planet proceeds?

Certainly not before PL9 IMO. Also, what move do you have in mind? Adjusting an orbit or going from one stellar system to another? In later case, I think it's impossible. It would be easier to Terraform a new planet and make it absolutely identical to the one left.

You mean to construct a "spaceship" around a planet, and with this spaceship's engines they could move the planet FTL? This would be a perfect solution of the interstellar movement of a planet. Or maybe there could be a planet-moving corporation (in PL7-8-9) who have numerous planet moving ships for 'your conveniance' :) Interesting...really big ships...yumm

Are the PLs in d20 future the same as the ones from Alternity? PL 5 is modern, PL 6 is nearish future with fusion tech and advanced materials, PL 7 is gravity-manipulating tech. I'm fuzzy on what PL 8 was, it has been a while since I read that, but PL 9 was Aasimovian "tech indistinguishable from magic" land.

In the Alternity version of PL7 Stardrive, societies have moved planets. It's expensive and difficult, but it has been done- the Thuldans moved 5 planets in to share a single orbit, terraformed the heck out of them, and use it as their capitol system. Conspiracy theories say that some alien race must have helped them, because they shouldn't have been able to do it on their own.

So mid-to-late PL 7 maybe, definitely PL 8.
