D20 Modern Gamma World - Story ideas

Hi all,

I've done some gene splicing to recreate Gamma World from D20 Modern, Darwin's World, and the Omega World article. I guess I just don't have the patience to wait for White Wolf's Gamma World.

Anyway, I could use a few story ideas. I have one, which will make a decent intro for a long-term campaign, and I have an ending in mind, but still missing almost the entire middle section, which is about 90% of where the campaign will play out.

The beginning: (Stealing liberally from Fallout) A couple characters emerge from a vault after several system failures inside make it inhabitable. As a result the vault is opened up. Most of the people stay near the original vault, but the characters are drawn away on a search for ancient technology. Their travells first bring them to an area (my home town :D ) where some greedy raiders have hoarded most of the city's supplies in an old shopping mall (now heavily fortified). To make matters worse, the area is in a severe drought, and the only place that has food and drinkable water is the shopping mall. The raiders are selling this stuff, but only in trade to people who have combat armor and guns. The party will have to go in and either take it by force (most likely) or negotiate for it (not so likely).

Fast forward to the end of the campaign, the characters manage to find a hidden cache of hidden technology, which includes a half built UFO. It turns out that before the apocalypse, a US government group actually was in contact with aliens who were helping them to leave the planet. In fact the group did leave the planet along with several others, but didn't share the technology with the rest of the world, so when the world governments decided to nuke one-another, most people were stuck on Earth when the bombs started dropping. If all goes well, the party will complete the UFO, round up a number of the good people and mutants, and fly off to a less toxic world with a brighter future.

Its the stuff in-between that I could use some help with. Anyone have any ideas they would like to share?

Perhaps the party could come across someone who knew about the UFO, but wasn't picked to go on it. Then finding the ship would be an over-arcing campaign goal, with the possibility of having the PC's unite a coalition to reform society. Sort of move from town to town, following leads on the ship, and converting the populace to their cause. To make the quest more urgent, perhaps have some parallel threat that threatens to bring about a second apocalypse, or destroy what little rebuilding has been done. Perhaps the "evil guys" have the strongest society, and independant villages or tribes have "sold out" for protection from more minor bands of raiders and gangs. Maybe the informant who told the PC's about the UFO also told this society, and they have a more nefarious use for its technology.

Anyway, just some random brainstorms, hopefully something there will give you food for thought.:)
 

You're aware that Swords & Sorcery is going to be doing a couple of Gamma World books in the not so distant future (this year I believe)?
