Pathfinder does a little more than just what you describe, but I agree - d20 Modern is not that closely tied to D&D that it makes a lot of sense. I think it might be more the "philosophy" behind it. Pathfinder did not change the entire setup of the game system. It tweaked things. It changed a few subsystems around (combat maneuvers for example). For example, a lot of the Pathfinder changes make every class more interesting, giving them more special abilities and designing them a little more "exciting" or at least feeling "fresher" than they used to be. I think that's something d20 Modern could indeed need. The class talents are ... disappointing. Look at something like the Melee Smash Tree. It's basically three talents that say "deal a point more damage with your melee attacks". That might be one of the best (at least most effective) Talent Trees the Strong Hero has... And it can hardly be more boring. Then there are some Charismatic Hero talents that require you to spend an action to make a roll and if that succeeds, a small number of your allies gets a bonus for a short while. That's incredibly convoluted for a very weak benefit. Or look at Action Dice! The core system allows you to roll an extra d6 when you spend them. It doesn't really make things more interesting or "actiony". Only some classes grant features where you can spend AP for cool effects. But it comes too late and too little. This seems stuff along the lines of a Pathfinder-like overhaul. That said, there are already d20 modern overhauls or d20 modern like games around. Modern20 for example, I think True20 and I think also Grim Tales (?). I am not really sure what this project would have to offer that the others did not, on a conceptual or "philosophical" level. Edit: Seeing arscotts post. I think that - aside from my lack of time - is something that kinda worries me too. Where is this project really going? What are the goals? If I knew more details, knew their vision, I would have something more solid to decide on. "Yes, that is a direction I can see myself supporting and even contributing, possibly." But as it stands, I can only speculate, and my speculation leads me in directions that might seem interesting in some way, but just not enough for me to become a patron.
