D20 Modern: Treasure Hunter

Greetings all.

Over the past couple of years I’ve been working on a core rulebook and setting for an Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider-style of D20 Modern campaign, and it’s now reached the point where I’m looking for feedback from other players and GMs. For this reason I’ve started a Yahoo group dedicated to that style of game; all who are interested are invited to join. The URL is:

While the rules I've written would work for either time period, my preference runs toward a modern-time campaign; the familiar time period makes for a more comfortable setting, in my opinion.

How much of the 'FX' stuff is in it? RPGObjects already has something out in this category that you would be competing against, but it seems a little FX heavy...

Here again the rules are pretty flexible; they include options for running a no-magic, low-magic and high-magic game.

My personal preference runs toward low-magic; the occultists and priests can cast some spell (mostly those that do not have visible effects), but anything more powerful is only available through the artifacts and relics which are the focus of the adventures.

Not to make light of your efforts, but why don't you use the Pulp Heros stuff fron the Poly ?

My reasons for writing my own material are twofold.

First, I wanted something that would dovetail a little more neatly with the D20 Modern RPG; at the time the updated Pulp Heroes for use with Modern had not been released.

More importantly, I wanted to start a resource for the genre that would be 100% Open Content, so that people could take or contribute whatever they wanted. While there are a number of excellent pulp-style resources available, I wanted to keep this one public domain. Just like with the D20 Open Game License, it ensures that the game will survive beyond one contributor.

I downloaded and read through your file. First thing that jumped out at me as being problematic is the Smite Evil ability.

It works well in most D&D fantasy type settings, where there is a clearly defined good and evil. Under the current draft of your rules however, it is possible for priests of two different religions that both view the other as the evil one. So, who gets to use the ability? Theres a handfull of options I can think of off the top of my head that you could use:

  • Have a list of which religions Smite Evil will work against, and which it won't (in my opinion this is a poor choice, especially if you want to try to publish).

  • Allow Smite Evil based off of who the priest (and his religion) view as evil. So, both priests could use it, but not against the same targets.

  • Allow Smite Evil to be used against those that intend harm towards the priest. (another fairly poor choice, as it could be interpereted to be used against anybody the priest is in combat with).

  • Find a different class ability to use.

Well, just my two cents after a quick read through, hope the input helps.
