Where his Welsh-born father Mr Harry Jones was the Post Master in a small rural community from which came Harry Makaka's mother Tira (a halfcast native) who died when Harry Makaka was about 6. What is known is that Harry Makaka was a friendly but tenacious young man ewith a great facination for life in general. He possessed a keen intellect and a gift for languages. He was tall and handsome and had the good build and health of his polynesian forebears. it was not long after his 17th birthday that Harry was employed by the BBC in its foreign language broadcasting service and in this capacity he did some work with Nancy Wake a journalist based in Paris. After hostilities broke out Harry did spend sometime in the British military mainly as a radio operator and worked closely with the New Zealand Maori Battalion even developing a Maori language based code for communications to the New Zealand troops.
