D20 Polynesia?

Whizbang Dustyboots

There's Nyambe and Oriental Adventures and Mindshadows and Hamunaptra and various Greek myth books and Testament and so on, all covering a wide variety of settings other than the traditional neo-Medieval Europe D&D settings, but has there been a professionally done fantasy Polynesia? All I can recall are some quite old Dragon articles to that effect.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

To my knowledge: No. The closest you can come is drawing the attention of poster Tonguez, who should be along any minute now, and seems to have a well-developed world along such lines.

Of course, as a fellow New Zealander, if he were to consider publishing to sate your specific needs, I'd have to enquire about doing the art for the project. I've done full Aztec religious calendars as background details in other projects, how hard could cultures I'm slightly more familiar with be?

Living in Hawaii, I've often contemplated the same thing myself.

There are surely an abundance of adventure hooks in Hawaiian mythology (and even some local superstitions/traditions practiced by the locals this very day!)

A few modern day superstitions or traditions practiced (also believed to be true by those who practice them) in Hawaii:

1. You do not have any type of pork product in your vehicle while travelling accross the Pali Highway.

2. You do not take lava rocks away from the Hawaiian islands or face the wrath of Pele in the form of immense bad luck.

3. When you see lights coming down from the mountains, those are the Night Marchers. Don't look at them and stay out of their way.

4. Ghosts are everywhere and you treat them with respect.

There is a trilogy of books called the Navigator Kings series (can't recall who by). They're not great stories but they're okay and quite good for fantasy Polynesia.

I would also direct your attention to my own humble efforts at a fantasy Pacific folk (who started life as a nomadic sea-faring culture but inevitably took on Pacific elements) at

There's no D20 stuff there - it's predominantly fluff. I would suggest using a Shaman class of some sort if you were going to use Polynesia as a setting, plus maybe feats that involve tattoos and taboos both.
