Voadam

Legend
I've started doing reviews of d20 materials on the enworld review page. Any publisher who wishes to send review material to me please contact me at voadam@hotmail.com.

I generally read every page of the items I review so it takes me a while to go through material but my reviews are fairly thorough, check out my past reviews under the name voadam for examples.

Note I am not an official enworld staff reviewer, I just started posting reviews here after recieving some review material and analyzing books from my own collections.

So what part do you find the most difficult in reviewing? For me, it's time priority. Do I do something that's a few months old or something I just got? Focus on what I've purchased or what I've been sent.

I find it harder to digest campaign material as opposed to crunchy bits. For example, Heroes of High Favor I finished in two days and have started playtesting it. Guardian from Auran, well, I've installed the software and am reading through it making notes. They have an extnesive amount of background material so it's a little time consuming to add my own notes and ideas.

I'd say time as well, when I did reviews professionally prioritization was easy. I did reviews of specific books for articles on deadlines. Doing them for fun I have a lot more discretion on time, topic and style of review. I am inclined to prioritize material that is sent to me for review purposes prior to stuff that is lying on my shelf unless I am in the middle of working on a specific project at the moment.

I would say crunchy sourcebooks are the easiest to analyze, perhaps because they hold the most interest to me.

With adventures you have to decide whether you will give spoilers or attempt to talk about style of adventuring, flexibility, quality of content, etc. without revealing exact plot devices. I try for the latter but it is not as straightforward as dealing with a book on magic that generally does not have secrets that should be kept from players for maximum enjoyment.

There is also the question of whether I think something is good generally or this is good because it appeals to my particular tastes (or vice versa) and making that clear to the reader.
