D20 to GURPS Undead type conversion? Some help here?

First Post
I'm looking for help, specifically, I want to use GURPS Lite instead of D20 Modern for horror/supernatural themed games in modern times.

Specifically, I'd like to know what advantages and disadvantages the Undead type would give a creatture.

This is a very interesting idea and I would applaud it as I've always thought d20 should produce a *universal* -- any-genre rulebook -- like the GURPS corebook.

People say d20 Modern does this . . . well why call it d20 Modern? The title of the book, alone, pidgeon-holes it to a specific genre. Why not release it as "d20 Core" if it is capable of managing Modern / Primitive / Horror / Medieval / Swords & Sorcery / Sci-Fi / Supers / Mutants / Pulp Action / Psionics /etc.

Teflon Billy will pimp Grim Tales to you. That's not enough for me, however. I wanna see WotC -- the auther of d20 -- have the courage to produce something in this vein. Why? So there will be a "d20 Core" reference document with NO REFERENCE TO D&D WHATSOEVER! (The SRD does this? Well why not publish it as "d20 Core"?)

The systems are too different. It's possible to convert ability scores (Gurps stat = 10 + D&D ability modifer; Wis-Int = Strong/Weak Will; Cha-Int = Charisma/Shy), but the skill, magic, and combat systems are too different to convert except in vague, general ways.

Geoff.

Actually, you can´t really convert systems, I think - you can convert settings (that are sometimes heavily tied into the systems they use).
I am not familiar with the GURPS rules, but from all I heard, the rules should be sufficient for any generic modern setting.
Anything more specific is campaign dependend.
The basic premise of the settings of the D20 Modern Core rulebook are not really tied into the D20 Mechanic - you don`t need vancian magic to come up with fantasy creatures that emerge from the shadows.

Thank you, I had already found that particular site, but was hoping someone else had found one that was a bit better.

What I specifically would really like, is help on what advantages to give an undead creature converted from D20 Modern.

Being a bit of a GURPS fan and playtester, I will try and see what I can do to help. First, let me just say that a number-crunching "put a d20 character in and get a GURPS character out" conversion would be, in short, quite a pain to create. I am sure someone will try it, but it is not really necessary. What you want to convert is concepts. It should be very easy to do.

Now, my question is, are you converting to 3rd Edition GURPS, or the new 4th Edition? That will make a small amount of difference, but not anything that can't be compensated for in the long run.

For converting Undead into GURPS, I would first suggest getting your hands on GURPS Undead. It is a wonderful book handling all sorts of concepts on creating and using undead in any GURPS setting.

Failing that, I would try picking apart the d20 undead and work on picking similar concepts in GURPS. In several GURPS books you could find ready-made undead, plus templates for making just about anything undead. There are also some great websites out there with creatures and templates available.

You can also go to the new Steve Jackson Games web forums and post the questions you have, folks there (myself included) could provide help with any specific questions you might have.

Played GURPs for better then a decade and D&D sense AD&D (ya, so I am old  ), and I would say to anyone that wanted to convert D&D to GURPs- use fast and loose rules, don't try and number crunch it- it won't work.

Work out a written description of your D&D character- Shy, book wormish wizard, obsessed with magic, the study and preservation of it, etc and use that to create skills, disads and stats within GURPs. Then as the characters begin to come together individually talk to your players about point levels- I want a 200 point campaign, so lets see what we can do with that.

One last thing i would do if I were you- wait for 4.0 to come out, should be out reeaallllyyy soon

Good luck

Gah! Thanks for all the irrelevant, but well-intentioned help, folks.

I just want to know what I should give an undead creature to replicate what immunities the D20 undead type has. Thats all, really.

I'm new to GURPS and just wanted some suggestions.

I should have been more specific in my original post...

Who cares who publishes it?
