Daerns Instant Fortress

"The door will always be facing the owner of the device when it becomes a fortress, and it [note: the door] will open and close instantly at his command."

would be partly meaningless if it could not turn back into a cube. The 'always' implies it can happen more than once.
I disagree. I think the word "always" is there just for emphasis, meaning that this is not an optional effect. If the caster wants the door to face north, he must be standing to the north when the tower expands; there's no choice involved.

If the description said "each time it expands" or some such, then you'd have a better case.

I disagree. IMO, the 'always' is there to prevent malicious DMs from screwing with the PC, by for example saying that the door opens up onto the crevasse adjacent to the tower, rather than onto the walkway leading up to it.

Do flaming/frost/shocking weapon abilities state that they can be turned off?

What about a ring of blinking?

Do any of the command activated items have a specified method of turning them off or ending the effect? (I mean, other than the Ring of Invisibility.)

Now THIS is a question to ask Gary over in the General Forum, in that nice ongoing thread. :)

Anyone up for copying it over there? (I'm about to go AFK shortly...)

A tower that is made up of at least 3 stronghold spaces made of adamantine walls would net you at least 90,000gp. :D

A good place to co-opt the ELH method for the mithral and adamanti(insert suffix here) golems. It acts like the more valuable material but is really just iron/stone/wood. Just sneak Polymorph Any Object in as a spell prereq.

We always played it as re-useable but it would be a useful item either way. Less useful to adventurers but someone would want one.

Oh, heck yes! Just check out my Daern's Instant product line above! Homebuilders would die for this thing! :D

Is there a competing low cost line? Like Murlynd’s Instant Trailer, or Quall's Instant Houseboat?

Not sure, but I know "Billy-Bob's Instant Porta-Potty" should be available for consumer purchase this summer. :D

Well, the good Colonel has confirmed that this was originally supposed to be a multi-use item. Now to find what was intended for 3rd Edition ...

(Seriously, I'm positive that the designers meant it to be unlimited-use. But I still think it's underpriced at 55,000.)
