Dark Speech: Book of Vile Darkness

herbie

First Post
On pg 32 of the Book of Vile Darkness is Dark speech. Pg 33 is where my question comes in. Under some of the abilites it says bye using Dark speech you take 1d4 pts of Charisma dmg, but it never states if the damage is permanent or temporary. Am I missing something in the text? The feat for this is on page 48.

Well, in 3.5 ability damage is temporary and ability drain is permanent.

However, the BoVD is from 3.0 still, not sure if it already used this convention.

The abilitiy damage would be temporary for sure, tho.

Bye

SRD - ABILITY SCORE LOSS
Various attacks cause ability score loss, either ability damage or ability drain. Points lost to ability damage return at the rate of 1 point per day (or double that if the character gets complete bed rest) to each damaged ability, and the spells lesser restoration and restoration offset ability damage as well. Ability drain, however, is permanent, though restoration can restore even those lost ability score points.

Hi!

Thanee's got it right, I assume.
Because the nomenclature (3.0) didn't state "permanent damage", it'll be only damage not drain (3.5).

If you like to get some more information on Dark Speech, let Monte Cook (2002) speak:

DARK SPEECH [Extraordinary]

A special feat is required to speak even a single word of it correctly,.... Taking the feat is enough - your learn the Dark Speech without spending any skill points.

Using the Dark Speech takes a Standard Action, like speaking.

Kind regards
