For those of you who have the big, pretty book... is it viable to run Dark Sun with the only PC psionics as Wild Talents, i.e. without the use of PHB3?

Very much so. Psionic PCs are not required, though there is support for them in the 4e DSCS book.

If you want to make psionics more prevelant without using PHBIII, I would recommend the Wild Talents, plus a little reskinning of existing arcane classes to psionic. Sorcerer or Swordmage could be psionic, or even bard, if you want to keep arcane magic clearly in Wizard territory, where Dark Sun kinda assumes it is.

Really, psionics is not that different, just a keyword and the Dark Sun people's reaction to it.

I find myself with some of the same problem as I really dislike how psionics was done, but I intend to run Dark Sun games.

Ah well, no real problem, reskinning does nto hurt THAT much.......;)

Yeah, Dark Sun runs fine without PHB3 psionics, though the augmentation mechanics show up in the DS rules in the Noble Adept theme.
