Darkness vs Daylight

So tell me about how these interact. The rules say that the two spells negate each other (or supress). Right? The prevailing light source would then be there (like existing candles or whatever). What about additional light or darkness sources? Could they then come in and have an effect? So Darkness is cast. Then Daylight. They're negated. Would a light spell provide light with those two spells countering each other? What about a second Darkness spell?

We're in a session now and debating this much more than we should.

actually, daylight is a equal or higher level spell, so it would dispel darkness when you cast it, but darkness could not dispel daylight, because daylight is higher level. I am not sure how heighten would interact with this, however.

Assume Deeper Darkness, then (which is actually the case in this instance). I believe they negate each other, so I'm wondering if additional magic light would work.

They don't negate, the DISPEL, which means the other effect is no longer there. Deeper Darkness and Daylight would just keep dispelling each other.

I also thought about that recently, and I came to the conclusion, that it would be best, if they do not automatically dispel each other, but rather, that you can use them as a dispel or counterspell, but otherwise, they just negate each other normally (suppressing the lower level spell, or each other, if they are of equal level).
