The lakes are key for trade, with three of the cities in the region being connected by water. The two largest cities in the region, Bastion and Purity have maintained the cross lake ferry which existed prior to the war. The lakes are heavily polluted, too much so to drink the water but there is quite a bit of mutated life in the lakes. There are also two working water purification plants (one in Bastion and one in Purity). The abundance of water (relatively) and food from fishing makes the region able to support larger populations than most areas of the twisted earth. The lake levels are lower but not much so. While travel to the north is quite dangerous because of the wildlife in the northern regions, it is very cold there, and snows frequently. This helps keep the lakes from drying substantially. With harsh deserts to the south and bitter cold to the north, the region experiences something of an Africa-like weather system characterized by harsh dry summers punctuated by huge downpours. Bearpath itself does not. Apolis (Minneapolis) does though conditions there have changed rather dramatically in recent months. I94 has been maintained jointly by Bastion and Purity almost since the war. The roads traveling around the lakes are in surprisingly good condition. South of Chicago things become much much worse. Due to mutated insect life to the north, and the Feeding Grounds (Chicago) to the south, which contains thousands of ghouls, the civilzation is something of a pocket. Travel north and south is highly dangerous. The CrystalTime has trade routes to the west and some news filters in through them. Toronto is not covered in this supplement though I might address it later. The region is surprisingly intact, mostly due to the fact that it was not the direct target of any nuclear weapons. No one in the region has any idea why, and yes, they think it strange that the heartland was not nuked as well. However, with radiation carried on the winds from everywhere else and a massive population of over 10,000 ghouls, it's not really recognizable anymore either. You're quite welcome. This has been my baby for quite awhile now. I pitched this book to RPGObjects before I had a single credit to my name so it's really great to see it come out at last. Chuck
