I don't think that Aerosmith would really work. The reason that van halen works is that Dave is the vocalist version of Eddie, and Alex is the drummer version of both of those. The base player, Mike, is sort of neutral, as he doesn't really seem to be a character. But those three are just these egotistical guys whose egos are rightly justified by their abilities.

When women make derogatory statement about themselves ("I look fat in these pants"), we WANT you to say "No you don't!" even if you're lying. Usually. I try not to do that because I think it's crappy.

But when men talk down about themselves, we don't really know how to respond. Men are supposed to be confident and strong (according to what society has taught us); a man who's insecure about himself won't be able to jump to the challenge of telling us we're not fat! (<~ sarcasm). But typically, we're so used to men being confident and not worrying about how they look, that when a man makes fun of himself (and not in a self-deprecating way, but in a way that makes it obvious he has low self-esteem), we are a bit unsettled. Sorry, fellas

You're also supposed to be perfectly proportioned, chipper at all times, smell nice, and always be ready with a can of beer and a massage. You're supposed to take care of the kids and not speak unless spoken to.

Tell ya what, you abandon your unrealistic expectations, I'll abandon mine.

So I had a nice conversation with a lovely woman last sunday. Durring the conversation I let slip that I might be a little insecure on a Messageboard that she and I both frequent. But I made a joke about it and changed the subject. Then she said:

"Oh Aaron, You're so funny!"

At the time I couldn't remember if this was good or bad. It took me three days to remember. I finally remember!

Guys if you hear this, its a warning shot. It means that what you just said can be interpreted that you are insecure but she is letting it go. Its a warning. Its saying "What you just said makes you sound insecure but I am interpreting it as a joke." It also can be a nice way of saying "your joke really wasn't funny, but I like you so I am overlooking it."

Yeah, I learned this a while back, and the validity of it was verified by conversations with my sister as well as a couple of female friends of mine.

I don't know who originally coined the phrase "Chicks dig confidence", but it's about as true a statement as ever there was. There are perhaps 12 women on the face of the planet who think that shyness and insecurity are sexy (some may consider it endearing, perhaps, but that won't make a woman attracted to you), the rest want a guy who is strong and secure.

So guys, be careful about acting insecure or making self-depreciating comments around a woman that you're trying to impress. Chances are it'll do a lot more harm than good.
