"daze" is a level 0 spell that affects a single creature of up to 4 hit dice.
"daze monster" is a level 2 spell that affects a single creature of up to 6 hit dice.

suppose a version of the spell were researched, and called "daze anything." if this new spell were to have no limit on the hit dice of the target, what level might such a spell be?

It depends on how long the daze effect lasts. If, like the cantrip, it's only for 1 round, then I'd probably rule it a level 4-5 spell. If the duration is longer it might go higher.

Single target or area?

A 10 Area burst centered on caster can be 3rd level (the psionic version is 2nd level and usually when converting you add or reduce level by 1).

Maybe something with Area Burst centered on caster 10 feet + 5/3 levels.

Huh. I think I'd make it a 4th level spell initially and test its effectiveness. If the players always pick it once they get to that level, then it's maybe too powerful so you'd want to up the level. I'd have to play with it a little while to see.

Interesting thing to note is that there are no monsters immune to daze. Unless you specifically add the mind-affecting descriptor, even golems are oozes are affected by it. Not sure if it should account for anything though.

actually, daze is a compulsion, to which golems and oozes are immune. ;)

Not really. The daze spell is a compulsion. But that does not mean that all daze conditions are automatically compulsions by nature.

The dazed effect (such as when caused by effects such as "born of 3 thunders feat) has no such connotation. :)

Interesting because tome of battle has a maneuver which dazes its target, and my party has been using it on golems to great effect (no thanks in part to their poor fort saves and lack of a con score/mod).

so getting back on topic... ;)

"daze anything" is less powerful than "confusion" (a 4th level spell), and more powerful than "daze monster" (a 2nd level spell). so i'm making "daze anything" a 3rd level spell.

thanx everyone. :D
