So I was reviewing the UA article and realized that many of the abilities presented in the article are actually really cool. In particular, I really like the Technomancy Wizard Tradition. However, most of the D&D I play is more classic medieval fantasy. But I got to thinking, how might I incorporate the Technomancy Wizard into a classic setting? Mechanically and even thematically, most of the powers can be reflavored and work pretty well. Maybe it could be called a Dweomer Wizard Tradition. Electronic Tablet as a spellbook could become a literal tablet with "arcane screen" or crystal ball. Maybe you gain a homunculus familiar that serves as your spell book. The Program Spell ability could become Imbue Spell and choose some appropriate item of relative value. Chained Device could become Chained Sentience where you imbue some item of relative value with sentience that can concentrate on your behalf, or even have your homunculus familiar as the focus for the concentration. The only real hang ups I'm finding are with the Bonus Proficiencies (Doesn't work in a game without guns or hacking tools) and Online Casting (doesn't work without a network of technology/communication that is prevalent across the setting). With the Bonus Proficiencies, I was thinking instead something to help gain a bonus to intelligence based checks to get some rare or obscure information. Like a +5 to intelligence based skill checks twice per short rest (less versatile than the Divination ability, but you get them more often). Alternatively, given the previous homunculus idea, you could gain a type of improved familiar that would be the focus for this magic. If that were the case, I would likely give it HP per level and your proficiency bonus to AC and Saves, if for no reason but something that precious to your class can't be super squishy. With Online Casting, I'm really stumped. I can't think of anything within the general theme that would translate well to a more traditional D&D setting. If using the homunculus, I suppose you could just cast any spell through your homunculus familiar as if you were standing there. But in that case your familiar's range would need to be improved I think. But if not using the homunculus idea, what could you do instead? Anyways, these are my general thoughts and ramblings on the matter. I thought it might be cool. Any help would be appreciated.
