Having re-read Van Vogt's Voyage of the Space Beagle, I've come up with this:

Deflector Beast

Large Magical Beast
Hit Dice: 7d10+21 (59 hp)
Initiative: +2 (Dex)
Speed: 40 ft.
AC: 19 (-1 size, +3 Dex, +5 natural, +2 deflection)
Attacks: 2 tentacles +9 melee, 2 claws +4 melee
Damage: Tentacle 1d6+4, claws 1d8 +2
Face/Reach: 5 ft. by 10 ft./5 ft. (15 ft. with tentacles)
Special Attacks: Pounce, rake 1d6+2
Special Qualities: Blindsight, deflection, energy resistance
Saves: Fort +8, Ref +7, Will +3
Abilities: Str 18, Dex 17, Con 16, Int 5, Wis 12, Cha 15
Skills: Jump +12, Listen +7, Move Silently +7, Spot +7

Deflector beasts, also called couerls, look like sleek black panther, except for their two long tentacles sprouting from its shoulders and ending with feeler pads. Its ears are tipped with tufts of hair, like a lynx.

Combat

Deflector beasts rake opponents with their tentacles and bite foes that get close.

Pounce (Ex): If a couerl leaps upon a foe during a charge, it can make a full attack even if it has already taken a move action.

Rake (Ex): A couerl that pounces onto a creature can make two rake attacks with its hind legs for 1d6+2 damage each.

Blinsight (Ex): A deflector beast has blindsight in a 60-ft. radius.

Deflection (Su): A deflector beast is continually surrounded by a deflection field that shield it from all attacks, equal to its Charisma bonus or 1, whichever is lower. (Average deflector beasts get +2 deflection AC bonus).

Energy Resistance (Su): The deflector shield of the couerl also shield it against damage from various energies. It ignores the first 10 (Cha bonus or 1, whichever is lower, times 5) points of damage from any positive energy, negative energy, force, cold, fire, electricity, or sonic attack.

Skills: A deflector beast receives a +8 racial bonus to Jump checks.

I'm quite sure that you mean "whichever is higher" else it makes no sense! 1 is nearly always lower than the charisma-bonus or at least equal.

Indeed. The actual default value I provided worked like that.

A typical deflector beast has Cha 15, which is an 11 with a +4 racial modifier. If the base Charisma was 6 or lower, the Charisma bonus would be +0, less than +1.

This is important to mention since the Deflector Beast might be attacked by some creature or effect that drains Charisma. They are out there, after all :)
