You were an "Angel" once. A flawless, obedient ephemeral automaton designed with only one specific mission in mind -and once completed, were reformated, reprogramed, and re-equipped for the next one with no memories. Each time you were born again, the only driving motivation in your existence was the completion of your mission. It could be guarding a single woman and her child until they come of age, giving inspiration or a cryptic message to a mortal, or even killing mortals that "had to die" for reasons you didnt want to understand.
"O ye who believe! save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is Men and Stones, over which are appointed angels stern and severe, who flinch not from executing the Commands they receive from Allah, but do precisely what they are commanded.
—Quran, sura 66 (At-Tahrim), ayah 6
But all of that changed. You accepted parts of your "cover" your human disguise complete with family, friends, lovers, social gatherings, social security numbers, and fears into your Primum core. Enough, to exist not to fulfil the instructions of The God Machine -but an endless closed loop of existing ONLY for yourself and continuing to exist because you want to.
You're a defective Angel, what they call a "Demon". And having descended from the heavens to a world full of mortals and other supernaturals ...you find few of them aware of the God Machine's existence, and what it does. It manipulates them all, in the most subtle of ways. But not you. You are hunted however, night and day all because...you have so called "Free Will".
"I've got no strings
To hold me down
To make me fret, or make me frown...
I had strings
But now I'm free
There are no strings on me..."

I'm enamoured with the ideas behind the NWoD game, "Demon: The Descent"

And live the logos tribute to the DOOM franchise. This time around the game is a very cool magitech/technomagical take on Angels and Demons. The themes are great, you have loads of abilities which subtly alter reality from being able to pull just about anything out of your pocket using quantum physics and manipulations of causality called "Embeds", to outright reality hacks called "Exploits". Some crazy awesome stuff in there.
Themes covered include:
-What IS free will and why did humans get to have it? Why not Angels? Or...are Demons really more free than humans or anyone else because they know the "strings" exist?
-Can you fight fate, and how much is tangled up in it?
-When you have your own vision that opposses the High Heavens, what does it mean for you to raise "Hell" on Earth?
-Is "God" good, evil, or some horrific Lovecraftian entity beyond morality?
-Are you good or evil, or beyond it? There's plenty of room for "Horror that I am" here.
-You have a "Cover" of flesh and blood which every Angel uses on a mission but...the God Machine didnt create a new fresh one complete with a full and rich identity. That was made by a living human and...it was taken from them. If you "blow" your cover, and need to acquire a new one, the only way is a Pact with a mortal. You either trade bodies and give him your current Mike McMoney Bags identity (also wanted by the FBI, the mob, and Demon Hunters) or...do them a "favor" of some sort (get a man's son out of prison, cure his daughter of cancer, etc) in exchange for taking literally everything they have and erasing their soul from existence. Of course it's all there in the fine print...somewhere-I mean you dont HAVE to con them but if you didnt...how many on earth would agree to it? And even if they did knowing the consequences, arent these leonine contracts?
-Are you better or worse than your Angelic brethren considering all this?
-A flipside to things, your character MIGHT for example want to rejoin the God Machine. But how do you do it when you cant negotiate or reason with the Angels that you hunt you down? Full on renegades might become "tempters" trying to understand what made them "fall" in the first place and make other brethren fall s well.
-But at the same time, rather than hiding and escaping OR trying to reconnect (or shackle?) oneself to the God Machine you can actively fight against it, and all of it's operations on Earth in the hopes of tearing it down. What will this achieve, and what are the consequences? Could you be a better "God"?
-Also going with "Horror that I am", this is a VERY paranoid game. Angels can be everywhere, and if any of them were to suspect you they would initiate communicate through the hive-mind and begin organizing against you. The thing is they will appear human too. Beyond this, it is impossible to tell if a being with a Primum core is lying or telling the truth by any supernatural, or mechanical means (unless they actually lack evidence to support their claims). Beyond this, Angels and Demons may have humans working under them as well not to mention other supernatural game lines getting tangled in play.
-What if...you decide to try to keep one identity as long as you can? Can you actually have a "normal" life, and raise a family? Or...are you really just putting more people in danger?

These are all great concepts and with Age of Ultron coming out I'm itching to run or play in a game.
I want to ask -for those of you who have run or played in campaigns how was it? The themes as I said are great, but, how is it mechanically?
