In my current d20 Modern Campaign: Department 7 was designed as a branch of the United States National Security Agency. Approximately 3 years ago, (in the year 2000), the end of the world began. Through small signs, paranatural manifestations have been slowly increasing, and Cosmic horrors from millions of year ago are beginning to manifest. Deep Ones are sighted off the coasts of Massachusetts, Virginia, and Florida. Entire small towns from across the globe have disappeared overnight, taking roads and landscape with them. Los Angeles California was divided into two, splitting in half by a 150-foot wide gulf, and millions died. The town has been rejoined by a connecting bridge, but things large and wormlike in shape have been spotted deep in the gulf. People have begun to go mad. The paranatural horrors crawling from the shadows either make people strenuously deny what they have seen, or drive them stark raving mad. The Mental Health Care has been nationalized due to the sweeping influx of inpatients. As a result of the encroachment of eldritch armageddon, the NSA was given special powers to deal with the situations occurring. On of the first things detected was human beings with the rare power to resist the sanity blasting beasts and spells that were gradually revealed. The search for such beings was given to the seventh of seven new Departments of the NSA. (Internal Nicknames for the people in said Departments are in parenthesis.)

Department-1: Paranatural investigation, identification, and classification. ("Debriefers")
Department-2: Paranatural Information Control. ("Spinners")
Department-3: Paranatural Situation Containment. ("Cleaners")
Department-4: Paranatural Research & Application Development. ("Geeks")
Department-5: Paranatural Relations. ("Fausts")
Department-6: Special Projects Division (???)
Department-7: Paranatural Operations. ("Agents")
Dept 7 works closely with dep's 1, 2, and 3, and much less so with the other departments. Central command is VERY tight-lipped with what goes on in Department 6. Department 7 used to be part of Department 3, but when the special agents resistant to insanity were discovered, the new Department was created.
