I agree with almost everything here, except the sentiment that there are too many spells and too few class abilities. I lean in the opposite direction… too many abilities are mundane little things that ought to have been spells, IMHO. And I’m not a fan of class abilities that are like "you always have this spell prepared and can cast it without a slot once per day", that’s just lazy design I think… if the spell is compelling mechanically and flavor-wise, then let the market decide! Players will pick it up and cast it. No need to force them. Regarding spells though, I have a problem with the Bard’s Magical Secrets… either: - No one should have that, or everyone should. - If it’s going to be a thing, then there should be some penalty for going out of your lane, such as needing a higher slot to cast it, or spending bardic inspiration, or whatever it is. More broadly, I lean towards "everything is a skill or a spell", and maybe some other thing in the middle. Essentially, a skill is something you can do at will (picking a lock, casting a cantrip, making a save, swinging a weapon), while a spell is something you trigger by spending a resource, ideally a daily one (essentially, spell slots). Then either that’s all there is, and we get rid of short rests and the abilities that regenerate with them, or else there is a middle thing, that requires expending a more short-term kind of resource, e.g., "stamina", and that’s what fuels ki, second wind, etc.
