DESTRACHAN sound attack

a DESTRACHAN can do this:

Destructive Harmonics (Su): A destrachan can blast sonic energy in a cone up to 80 feet long. It can also use this attack to affect any creatures or objects within a 30-foot radius. It can tune the harmonics of this destructive power to affect different types of targets. All save DCs are Charisma-based.

Material: When using this form of harmonics, a destrachan chooses wood, stone, metal, or glass. All objects made of that material within the area must succeed on a DC 15 Fortitude save or shatter. Objects (or portions of objects) that have up to 30 hit points are potentially affected by this attack.

???? time:

Objects carried by a PC (armor, weapons, etc.) get to use the PC's Fortitude save right?
MAgic Items would be effected (affected?) right?
HOw would this effect say...an arrow? Just the tip would break right?

Don't talk to me about sonic attacks. I just lost 163000gp worth of equipment because our party WMD (wizard of mass destruction) decided to hurl a sonic fireball where my body was. The fact that I was dead is irrelevant.

On topic though, I'm pretty sure the items use the PC's saving throws because they're attended.

Unless I'm mistaken, attended objects aren't affected by area attacks unless the person carrying them rolls a natural 1 on the saving throw. Then, they are affected in a certain order. In general, attended objects are only affected by anything if they're specifically targeted.

(edit)

Of course, if you're dead, your items are no longer attended...

In this case, it seems as if all the objects below 30hp of the chosen matreial are targetted by the effect.

The destrachan in the Dungeon #86 adventure Rana Mor is described as targeting the PC's weapons and armor. So it seems that this is a special case (like rusting grasp or the rukanyll's rending plates) where the armor/weapon is being targeted directly rather than as a side effect.

SO I ended up using this the other night.

I had each character make a saving throw (using their Fort save) for their metal armor and weapons. I also included magical gaulents but not magical amulets or bracers.

NObody lost much except for the poor dwarven cleric who rolled 2,3,4, and lost his shield, armor, and main weapon. Poor kid.

ANywho, did I play this right?

Yes. You played this right.

Just make sure that if the situation arises again, you handle it the same way.

Poor Dwarves. They always seem to get the short end of the stick. It's a shame, I think, that the PHB never mentions the luck penalty taken by the player who elects to play a dwarf. Most people don't realize that this is actually what balances the race at LA +0.
