If he doesn't truly believe in some of the thesis' of faith he'll never be credible in the eyes of the priest. And he believes (even if I don't because of meta-game thinking) that there's quite a big chance that the disease cannot be cured and that he and the rest of humanity better learn to live with it as best they are able.
