Well, this fall/Q3 2025 we are getting a Kickstarter for The TTRPG version of Diablo.
I think the thing I find the most interesting is that, according to the pre-launch page, it's going to be a D6 dice pool system. So, I'm gonna laugh** if it ends up being a Soulbound-like.

Editor's Note: I mean that in the most affectionate way possible. I wouldn't mind it being a Soulbound-like at all. Epecially since it mentions that "Level 1 characters aren't squishy, but already seasoned heroes starting from session 0"

The Kickstarter will sell mostly on the brand, but whether the game actually ever gets played is going to rely very much on whether the system is fun/engaging. The designer list seems to be an almost random selection of people who have designed compelling and deeply uncompelling games, so it's hard to see which would win out there.

One issue I do see is that if they're not even doing the KS until Q3, the game presumably isn't coming until like, late in 2026, and by then, they'll be not just one but two classes behind Diablo 4, which I think may hurt them a bit (though maybe they'll add Spiritborn at least?), especially because one of the major persistent complaints about D4 is the lack of a Paladin-esque class, which many people see as important to Diablo vibes (personally I'd say it's arguable but it's undeniable that it's a common feeling).

I'd love to see some sort of solo-roleplay component, considering the original 2 games were single player...
The original two games were multiplayer or single-player, actually, just like D3 and D4.

The fact that they were multiplayer at the time multiplayer started being cool and popular is a big part of why they went so huge. The B.net chat and so on is extremely famous. Diablo II would have been a nothing-game that sold about 1/5th as many copies (if that) and would be largely forgotten, not a genre-defining and much-emulated classic had it been single-player only.

The only difference with D3 and onwards is that they're always online. That's a separate issue, and something that sprang directly out of rampant cheating and hacking in D2.

That doesn't mean a solo play mode wouldn't make sense, but it's just wrong to describe the first two games as "single-player" without qualification.

We already have a long thread about this, so I’ll close this one.
