Diabolic Pacts Rules

So on our last adventure, the ranger entered into a pact with a chain devil to get a cure to a disease afflicting an island. In return, he promised that neither he nor our party would harm the devil as long as he remained in "the East." Should the party violate the contract, our souls are forfeit.

Can the ranger's promise that we will not attack the devil actually bind us or inhibit our behavior? Further, can the devil actually acquire our souls since they are not, in my opinion, his to give?

I would say 'no' and 'yes', in that order. You sign that kind of contract (or even agree to one) and you -- and they -- are bound to it, and that is that.

Upon the death of the mortal signatories, the price is paid (souls are forfeit.) Done.

The thing is, he agreed to and signed the contract, but we (the rest of the party) were unaware of the contract. My notion is that our souls are not the ranger's (the signatory's) to promise away. Its like selling property that doesn't belong to you.

I realize that its ultimately the DM's decision, I'm just seeing what the general opinion of others are.

Ah. Whoops, I totally missed that rather important point. :)

In this case, I agree with your notion. And if I were a player, I'd be arguing that case, if it came to that.

It would depend if the Ranger had the right to negotiate on behalf of the party. Devils are slippery critters and anything like making him/her (the ranger) a spokesperson could put you in a tough situation . . .

Nasty. Ranger is screwed.

If the party does not goes along with the pact, the devil gets the rangers soul because he broke the deal by speaking for those he could not.

If the party goes along with the deal, they may wind up being on the hook for accepting the terms after the fact.

After all is said and done the devil still might be able to take the rangers soul because he made said deal to include someone he did not have the right to.
