Whenever someone translates a rule into real pley the data is anecdotal. However the rules are clear: maximum of once every 24 hours, can be interrupted by combat, casting spells, and exertion and for most races needs to be a location where you can successfully sleep.I’m pretty sure it’s been close to that or similar for the last 20+ years. That seems to place a degree of limitiation on the 5MWD. I do think that the 5mwd is also driven by table convention though and the risk profile of the game. If the players face repeated deadly encounters, where combat is the only realistic solution and player death is a constant threat then players are going to want to stay more resourced. Where players face repeated PC death and a ‘gotcha’ DM they more likely to take a rest. The video was mildly amusing comedy but it does actually show why in it is less likely to see this behaviour. Namely - it’s really annoying and immersion breaking and a lot of players don’t want that. A lot of resting convention is about the social contract and that players of long-rest-restore-classes should want to be at least a little respectful of those classes that don’t need a rest. That comes down to communication and social awareness. Always open to suggestions of how resting mechanics can be improved though? I’ve flirted with the alternative options and found they were just as arbitrary and broke immersion the other way.
