If it made them profits during the time it was out, then I don't see how it was a waste of anything. From the begining I think D20 CoC was supposed to be a one-shot for WotC ... sort of a miniaturized version of D&D and D20 ... WotC puts out the big shiney core, somebody ELSE puts out all of the supplemental product that WotC doesn't want to produce. For WotC it was a profitable side that brought in some bucks from a strong cult-fanbase ... For the PLAYERS at WotC, I imagine it was more like a happy hand-up to Chaosium and a great chance to do THEIR thing with an old and much beloved RPG. For Chaosium it was a chance to get some wider recognition and a chance to tap into one of the few lucrative arenas left in the RPG industry ... d20 Gamers. Even Paladin Press was going to get into it with Delta Green d20, which was just going to be a reprint of the original book with d20 stats added in ... but I'd have bought it in a NY second. That's one guy, as far as I know, sitting in his basement trying to get a book made. --fje
