Die incriments

Does anyone know the correct damage die progression, starting with d1 all the way to d20 (or maybe higher)?

I'll give you and example of what I mean. First will be the die and an example weapon in paranthesis.

d1 (Shuriken)
d2 (Whip)
d3 (Unarmed damage from a small humanoid, non-Monk)
d4 (Dagger)
d6 (Short Sword)
d8 (Long Sword)
2d4 (Spiked Chain)
d10 (Bastard Sword)
d12 (Great Axe)
2d6 (Great Sword)
and so on...

I may have gotten the progression wrong, but you get the idea...

their are so many different ways. DMG and Deities and Demigods has one way, and Savage Speices has another.

Since Savage Speices is sorta our intro to 3.5, I'd go with with Savage Species says.

The easy way to look at it is how much the lowest/highest number possible is.

For example, d8 comes after d6 as the range on a d8 is 1-8. However, 2d4 comes after d8 because they have the same high point (8) but 2d4 will result in a higher low point (2 as opposed to the d8's 1). That's the easy way to look at it.

But in my example, what comes after 2d6? You could say 3d4 or you could say 2d8 (followed by 1d20?). There are a few paths, I guess I am looking for the "official" one. I'll take a look in SS when I get home.

I think it's 2d8. If you look at the monk's unarmed damage, the number of damage dice dice never goes above 2, so I think that's the most you can do (and would you really want to be rolling 5d4 for damage anyway?). So: 1d10, 2d6, 2d8, 1d20, 2d10, 2d12, 2d20.

Off the top of my head, the SS progression is:

1 -> 1d2 -> 1d3 -> 1d4 -> 1d6 -> 1d8 -> 2d6 -> 3d6 -> 4d6 -> 6d6 -> 8d6 -> 12d6 -> 16d6

1d12 -> 3d6

2d4 -> 2d6

what comes after 2d6? It used to be 2d8 (DMG, Dieties and Demigods, Magic of Farerun), but now its 3d6 (Savage Species)

2d6 -> 2d8 in the PH, DMG, MM, D&Dg, and Magic of Faerûn. 2d6 -> 3d6 in SS (and, presumably, the revised PH, DMG, and MM).
