Can anyone tell me what monster book (or anywhere else, for that matter) I can find a Pterodactyl in?

Thanks in advance.

How similar is Pterodactyl to a pteranodon, becauee looking over the 2E Monstrous Manual, they have that creature listed.
Here's a quickie conversion of the pteranodon with strong influences from the quetzalcoatlus)

Combat
Swallow Whole (Ex): Can swallow an opponent of at least 2 sizes smaller than self with a successful grapple check (bonus +8). Once inside the dinosaur, the opponent takes 1d4+2 bludgeoning damage and 1d4 acid damage per round from the gizzardd. A successful grapple check is needed to get free. Or a swallowed creature can cut its way out with either claws or a light piercing or slashing weapon) Dealing at least 15 points of damage in this way creates a hole large enough to escape. Once a single creature exists, muscular acton closes the hole, thus another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out. A large pteranodon's gizzard can hold 1 small, 4 Tiny, 16 Diminuitieve or 64 Fine opponents.
Freats: A creature that is flkung by the pteranodon after being snatched travels 30 ft and takes 3d6 damage. If the pteranodon is flying, the creature takes this damage or the appropriate falling damage, whichever is greater.

Excellent!

Psychotic Jim,

Thanks! These scores work a lot better than the scores for a Roc.

The PCs are around 4th level, so a CR 3 creature (or a few of them) fits the bill perfectly.

I appreciate you taking the time out to help.

I don't have the book on me at the moment with the pteranodon but the pterodactyl is the smaller of the two so if pteranodon is large (I may be wrong it may be huge) the pterodactyl might be medium-size. (Just a thought)

Just because I'm a complete dinosaur nerd --

Pteranodon refers to genus of flying reptiles, found in Cretaceous North America. This is the guy we see in Jurassic Park III, with the swept-back skull that points far back over the body. Wingspan of about 7-8 meters (20-30 feet).

Pterodactyl is sometimes used as an alternate for the Order name of Pterosauria, to refer to all prehistoric flying reptiles, but more properly is used as a sub-order or genus name for a large number of small, mostly fish-eating flying reptiles from the Jurassic onwards, found world-wide. The sub-order or genus is not clearly differentiated and the term is often confused.

But generally speaking, you can imagine a Pteranodon with a 20-30-foot wingspan, and a pterodactyl with anywhere from a 3-to-15-foot wingspan. The biggest of the big boys would have been Quetzalcoatlus, with a wingspan of 35 feet or more.

So there you go.
