Diseases in OSRIC 2.0

I was reading through the section on diseases in OSRIC 2.0 and I am a little confused about how they work. From what I understand this is part of the process:

1) PC saves vs. poison when exposed to disease
2a) If PC saves, PC gets +4 anytime he or she is exposed to said disease again
2b) If PC fails, PC contracts disease and there is a 2d8 day incubation period
3) If the PC has contracted the disease, at the end of the incubation period the PC takes 1d6 penalty to all ability scores and all rolls for 2d8 days

This is where I get lost. It goes on to say at the end of this second 2d8 day period that the PC either dies or recovers, but the language is a bit confusing as to how you determine which happens. How do you determine whether the PC recovers or dies? How fast does a recovering PC recover from the penalties? Is it one point per day?

The question is rather pertinent as I am running the Temple of Elemental Evil using OSRIC 2.0 and the party is likely to encounter the giant rats in the moathouse during our next session. I can come up with something on the fly if necessary, but I wanted to know what others think first.

A Save vs Death sounds about right.

One point per day sounds pretty good.
