Disguise Self

Can you use Disguise Self to alter your appearance to that of a half-dragon? I know you can't change creature type, and half-dragons are Dragons, but they are also (Augmented Humanoid)...

Two (contradictory) Thoughts:
  • Adding "augmented" changes your type.
  • Augmented type is "no big deal", so: why not?

Truth in Advertising: As a DM, I let a Hat of Disguise turn a half-fiend goblin into a "normal" goblin. Why not allow the reverse?

Disguise Self just lets you look like the half-dragon, not BE a half-dragon so ya I would allow it as well. Mind you, the others get a spot check .... "Hey those wings are made from parchment and....hey, those scales are clearly flecks of paint!"

Except that it's merely an illusion, so the wings wouldn't be made of parchment and scales wouldn't be flecks of paint. If I remember the Epic Level Handbook correctly, the spot DC to notice an illusion without actively disbelieving is 80- so if your PCs have that good of a spot, go right ahead.

Otherwise, they'd have to interact with him in order to figure out if his wings are fake or not. Of course, someone with good knowledge of dragons or physiology of such could probably notice that he hardly carries himself like he's got big leather weights on his back, and be able to try and make the save. Otherwise, they see wings. No spot check allowed.
