DM Genie Update - Class Editor

Janik

First Post
DM Genie has been updated, and now includes a class editor! Go to http://www.dmgenie.com/download.shtml to download it today.

DM Genie is a computer program for players and game masters running 3rd edition RPG. DM Genie understands the rules and recalculates bonuses automatically, even under conditions from spells or psionic powers. Features include adventure creation, random encounters, timekeeping, weather, XP/Difficulty calculator, 1900 items, customizable rules, dice roller, and more!

Major Changes
* New Feature: Class Editor. With the Class Editor (Shift-F2), you can enter every aspect of a class: BAB, saves, class/cross-class skills, bonus feats, class features, spells per day and spells known, psionics and their starting packages. Enter requirements for prestige classes too!

Minor Changes
* Improvements to the Condition Setter interface.
* A few fixes/additions to the help file.
* More pre-selected fields.
* A few minor bug fixes.
* See http://www.dmgenie.com/revision_history.shtml for a complete list of changes.

We are still working on a PC Creation/Levelling
wizard which will make PC creation much easier.
It will use the data from the Class Editor.
Coming soon!

Thanks to all

Hey Janik, have you considered integrating seamlessly with another package that already does that kind of stuff? I know there was a post from Twin Rose about Campaign Suite looking at a COM interface in the near future. Since you are using VB, that would definitely be a piece of cake to interface to.

I know you are probably wanting to provide all these features yourself so more people will buy your software, but a lot of gamers don't actually mind spending 30 bucks here for a good app and $30 more for another good app that does something else better. If we could get all these talented developers to focus on what they do best and just allow for seamless integration, the end-consumer and the developers would all be better off.

I personally haven't tried Campaign Suite yet, but I definitely like the idea of using two or three tightly integrated apps. Well, one or two for pre-game prep and hopefully only one for at-the-table reference.

I can't wait!

So far, DMGenie has been the easiest to learn and operate of the DM computer aids. Add in that PC creation/leveling wizard, and my money will be flying your way!:D

Does this class editor allow for prestige classes that add to your existing spellcaster class levels? What about more out-there adjustments based on class (I know it's not common, but say you had a class that modified your range of vision or even one of your 6 main stats)?

oddball classes

It would also be nice for classes such as the expert (DMG) and wanderer (from Swashbuckling Adventures) to work properly. I have a feeling that the wanderer would be especially tricky -- not only does the class allow you to select 12+Int bonus as class skills, but all profession, craft, and knowledge skills are class skills, as well. Add to this that when a wanderer puts a point into a profession, craft, or knowledge he gets to put another point into another skill of the same type for free, and it seems like it'd be a coder's nightmare.

But there are so many other nice features of DMGenie that this would just be icing on the cake for a character manager. If you were able to overide the alloted skill points, that would work just as well, I suppose.

Re: ddavison, about COM integration:

I'm very open to integrating with other programs. For now, the stat block import/export is more or less the extent of it (there's also the Monster Manual stat block importer/exporter). It would be nice to have it for feats/spells, etc... without having to copy/paste it manually.

Range of vision could be entered as a feature (kind of like Darkvision 60' for example). For increasing stats or other strange effects, the easiest thing is to add a note as a feature (like "+1 to Str" or something) but you'd have to apply the effect manually.

Re: tetsujin28, about class skills:

Variable or user-selected class-skills would be very tricky to implement, but not impossible - this could be left for a future update.
As for overriding the skill points (for example), I will design the levelling wizard to only guide the user, but never force anything. If you want to spend 200 skill points on one level, great! It will warn you that you are 196 points over budget, but it won't stop you.

Sorry my reply took a while, seemed everytime I logged on ENWorld's servers were down :(

That's ok -- ENWorld's been kind of buggy, lately, and I'm running on 56K:rolleyes:

Anyways, thanks for the quick reply...I'm really looking forward to the character manager!
