DM wants advice: Fortifying a Kou-toa village

Fortifying a Kou-toa village.

My party has wandered into the underdark looking for a vast underground city with a substantial library within. The problem is my party is lost and unable to get back to the surface. A tribe of lizardmen are found and an uneasy truce is made between the party and the lizardfolk. The lizardman chieften says to the party if the party kills the kou-toa whom the lizardmen are at war with, they (the lizardmen) will help the party get to the surface or to the underground city, whichever they want.

The party decides to help (not many other choices presented to them) and they wander to the outskirts of the kou-toa village. Along the way, they find a prisoner who informs the group that the drow have made an alliance with the kou-toa. The party is steadily encountering more a more kou-toa and are about to enter the actual village to attack it. They would see lots of kou-toa and a handful of drow and their slaves. I was thinking that the group could find a high ledge overlooking the enemy village so they could see exactly what they are getting themselves into and make a decent battle plan. In theory, they should attack the village using hit and run tactics. There are places to rest in this underdark area as long as you’re willing to hike it a few miles.

My question is this: How would a kou-toa village who are allied with drow fortify their village against a warring lizardfolk tribe? What types of traps or creatures do you think the drow would have placed once they got to the scene? In addition to the ones the kou-toa thought of all by themselves, of course. Their, of course, is the shrine to the kou-toa deity (don’t have the name handy right now), but how do you think it would be protected?

The kou-toa (lots of clerics) village population is roughly 75 and has been in the UD for years (35ish?)
The lizardmen (lots of warriors) village population is roughly 60 and has been in the UD for years too (50ish?)
The drow (mostly males) have recently made the alliance with the kou-toa (to receive healing mainly) and moved into the kou-toa village around six months ago.
There is plenty of sturdy mushrooms (acts like wood for the purposes of building or burning things) around for whomever to make things out of it.
The distance between the two villages is close to 15 miles.

After typing out kou-toa a dozen times, I realized I could of just typed KT. I suggest you use KT, as typing it out gets old fast.

I wrote up a prestige class for the kuo-toa monitor, too; it's basically a cleric/rogue cross optimized for using mancatchers. If you need it, let me know.

Algae-covered floors (Balance check) that dump characters who slip into a moat filled with giant stinging sea anemones (or whatever the Underdark equivalent would be...) (the KT as clownfish)
Or perhaps blind cave piranhas...
Seaweed that entagles/ grapples characters...
Narrow passages filled with razor sharp coral...
A giant crayfish/ lobster (sacred to Blibdoolpoop, of course)...

And like that there... :]

Place much of the KT city underwater. This should increase the challange to the non swimming PCs as well as seperate the battle- not a lot of Drow will be going under the surface to do battle, and the KT might consider the above water to be the Drow's area- thou not exclusive to either of course.

Channels of water might be wise- hallways to the KT, while the Drow use boats to get around.

As far as defenses- the ledge is a cool idea, but I think it should either be an observation point for the KT/Drow forces to over look their own village or perhaps something the village doesn't know about.

A room before the village could be used as a defensive area, one entrance/exit, perhaps even under water (the Drow used Water Breathing to make the alliance).

Defenders- a Roper in chains on a river makes for a guardian. He uses the river to gain his food and once in a while a KT gets to close- so that makes a nice snack.

Seems like a cool idea. Good luck with it.

if there is an easy place to overlook the village...

it should have a guard post there.

no civilization gives up the high ground so easily.

I've moved my kuo-toa brainstorming threads on the old Rat Bastard boards (now found here) into my public archive. There's lots of great ideas in there -- enjoy!

I read through most of this information and it was great. Thanks for the input. I've come up with some great ideas along with some nasty surprises. I just hope my party doesn't try a full blown head on charge or else they are in for a rude awaking.
