Every sentence of all those words of wisdom above were forged like a finely-honed sword from the coals and slag of dozens of terribly written dungeon crawls, over-rewarded PCs, total party kills, derivative adventures, and learning to deal with problem players maturely and efficiently. Some of these people have probably been DMing for decades, but they went through their first steps just like everyone else.
