i am a player and my DM has one fav tactic: focus on one PC at a time. In RL, I know this is the best tactic to winning battles, and the DM has every right to use it, but would it really be fair to the players? Lets say for now that the party lvl is 10, and there are four of them. A good challenge for them would be a group of 3 NPCs at lvl 10. I dont know about you, but in a fight, i kinda like to spread out because a clump is just an invitation for a fireball. In that case, the three would swarm one PC at a time and kill him. Granted, that they have to move from PC to PC, and would prolly die after one, is it really fair for them to say, "we are willing to sacrifice the group to kill one of your guys..." I mean, the DM knows you party lvl, and the NPCs party lvl, and should realise that nobody would say to themselves, "as long as we kill one of you, our mission was successful, even if we all die in the process..." As for when I DM, I usually have them face monsters (constructs, beatss, slaves)- things that have no will of their own, so they cannot retreat. but in cases when there is a chance to escape, my NPCs will use that avenue, rather than fight to the death. i live by the proverb, better to lose everything and live, than to lose everything after you die. I usually tend to make the players feel special too- giving them good plot hooks that cater specific to each character, and usually a big reward ( not always money, but immortality like a statue in the Great halls, or their names in the royal scrolls). My Dm says the smae thing. But he is only listening for compliments. If you tell him that you did not enjoy the last game becasue you thought a specific tactic was cheap, or that the information was not adequate, then he will call you a whiney b*tch.
