I think a lot of gamers are also people who, unlike the common masses of tv absorbed couch potatos, are unafraid of books. We think and picture things in our minds more easily, so while films, tv, computer games and comics influence us, we are able to create our own original visuals. Keep in mind that my main world is not a classic D&D world. Many creatures are influenced by their original mythical or folklore origins. I have as many designs for creatures as I do game worlds but generally things work as follows... Goblins look like a cross between the Orc/Goblins of LotR and Jim Henson's Labyrinth. Hobgoblins are larger and often more dramatically colorful (considering goblins are muted, pale, grayish-green on average). Orcs (when I use them) are more human then Goblins but still resemble them. I have used Porcine Orcs in the past but they were more like boar/Tellarites then Gamorreans. Heh, love those SF references for mythic creatures. :p Ogres appear to be large, hairy humans with horns and jagged, pointy teeth. The closest film comparision would be from Time Bandits. They are really strong of course and a bit behind humanity in tech level. Trolls are the most different from D&D. Trolls range from a human child to an adult bear in size with odd proportions (large ears, tiny eyes, long arms and short legs, patches of fur). They resemble primitive humans with animal like attributes, though no particular animal. The closest media icon would be...um...the Trolls from Gnomes crossed with the one in that car commerical...I may have to draw one. Lastly...Elves. If there is any major non-literary influence on my Elves it's been a mix of Japanese Anime/Manga and Brian Froud once again. My Elves descend from faeries and while some look like LotR Elves (High Elves mostly), others have much less human features. AD
