Do people use the core classes/PrCs from Dragon?

As part of the 3.5E launch, Dragon mag has been putting out loads of core classes as well as Prestige Classes. Have any players/DM tried them? Is there a different standard for these classes as compared to WotC (or even non-WotC) products?

Core classes - no. Don't like new core classes unless they are broad and serve an important role in the game. None of the ones I have seen in Dragon pass muster. Gimme Green Ronin's Master Class books!

Prestige classes - I use an occasional prestige class if it fits my campaign. The Dragon Slayers and Monster Cultists from older dragons were some good examples, though those aren't from recent (post 3.5) Dragons.

Our group doesn't tend to use PrC's a lot. So far, no-one has asked to play a base class from the Dragon. I did add levels of Herald to my Bard; it worked well, and I'd have taken more levels in it had we continued the game. I'll probably use one of the Greyhawk Paladin PrC's at some point.

One of my PbP players asked to play a Corrupter (from #313 I think, the evil issue), due to the character's background from a church that delights in corrupting others. Play's barely begun, but things seem to be going smoothly so far.

Haven't used any yet

Most of them seem pretty tailored for Forgotten Realms or Greyhawk or fit into situations I never use (especially Planescape kinda stuff). But just in general, most of the PrCs just don't fit into the feel of my campaigns.

Along the same line, there is less and less material in Dragon in general that I use...

Yeah some of their class abilities have been changed, instead of turning/rebuke undead you have turn and rebuke outsider, construct or in the case of the Corrupter divine magic. Now that I look at them again the Corrupter might be the most "broken" of the eight. That would be 312. :) To be honest I'm not sure how far from "core" that is as it's really nothing more than a paladin by a different name and alignment.

Also the same goes for the other two paladins in that magazine and the other five paladins are in 310.

For the record I like the new core classes, they give additional options and any additional option is a welcome one in my book. :)

My son is playing the evangelist, the divine spontaneous caster.

It's a bit different than a cleric, and that'll be very clear in another level (3rd), when he has to pick spells again. Does he take CMW? Probably not, and what will that do for the healing potential of the party?

PS

I've seen a few of them in action. Some were used as bad guys and seemed to be fine - monster cultists and some of the Drow Prc's spring to mind. Added some nice different flavour to enemies.

Had a nightmare with one of them:

Someone in one game used the grappler prc, which turned out not to be entirely balanced. Basically he was crippling a lot of villans to the point where they didn't get to act beyond the first round - even full class fighters several levels above him couldn't break his pins/holds..... not a satisfactory situation. He ended up getting very angry and quit the group when the DM asked him to switch to another character... hasn't played since. :(

I think that was more a problem of the GM not getting the full implications of the class before allowing it... but even so it was a bit overpowering.

None of them have fitted my campaign yet, so I've not used any.

I've introduced some core classes and prestige classes of my own, naturally, but there just hasn't been anything that made me think it was worth having.

Cheers
