We currently use Yahoo Groups which is free but has banner ads and the like. Not horrible amount though, and it's free so can one honestly complain? :) You get what you pay for. I've looked into Google Groups as an alternative, because Yahoo typically has poor email/web responsiveness (posts get lost in the ether, show up late/out of order, which makes it hard to follow a conversation/debate at times). That being said, the options and functionality of most of the service is pretty nice. Enough to make the periodic unresponsiveness a minor/major annoyance but not much worse than that. We average around 100 posts every two weeks, and probably half of that is random off-topic jokes on what other people say or did. :) Google groups is rumored(?) to have similar problems for responsiveness at times, and does not have all of the functional boons that Yahoo does (the ability to make folders for the file section, or a calendar for the group, for instance). I'd say currently Yahoo is pretty solid with the understanding that it can be a little flaky for immediate posting of your messages in the web portal. I find they do individual emails to your email account nicely. It almost always works right, even when the web portal is acting up - the other email options can be flaky as well though (daily digest, etc).
