Yes, I buy them and paint them.

But I also buy pre-painted when they're worth it to me.

Absolutely. Of course I seem to be one set behind WOTC in my campaign.
I started a campaign that began with Kenku and Bullywugs just before the came out with the Deathknell set which has them.

I started getting the mini's for the sole reason of using them in our tabletop game but I really like the skirmish games also.

I have always used minis but now I don't have a dozen pewter colored minis on the table (cause I am no painter) and it is easier to visualize with them in my opinion.

I'll use minis if they're about and are vaguely correct for the thing in question. If not, then I use counters - normally coins from the big change pot that lives in the room we play in. Ran one campaign when all I had for bad guys was about 30 plastic zombies. Got bored of putting them out for every fight and that's how it started.

In the one I play in, one of the other players has a great collection of Wizards minis - which really helps.

You should allow multiple choices in the pole...

A few hand painted, more prepainted (mostly plastic, but one high quality prepainted metal was used to good effect a few sessions back), yes dice (the cleric's player forgot his mini at the last session, so he was the 12 sider) and counters...

including Fiery Dragon counters. I got there Creature Collection Digital recently, and it is good: with a color printer and some cardstock type paper, you have an endless supply of quality counters

I voted for the third option, although 'I use counters or whatever is to hand' seems like it should be a 'no' choice rather than a 'yes' choice.

Thats said, we do occasionally use minis because one of the guys brought a pot round, but we also use plastic toys, bits of card cut to size, or just pencil marks on graph paper just as often.

Well, actually...

I buy mini's and pay a poor college student friend of mine to paint them. I still put my vote in the first catagory.

I voted no since when I run we don't use mini's but in the games I play in the people seem to like their minis and use them. I always have to borrow from people though.
