doable in 1 round?

Had an interesting situation come up in a game last week. Two PCs wanted to get over a wall while being chased by guards. The wall was 5ft tall. The two PCs were 10 ft from the wall and in adjacent squares. Here's what they did:
PC1 grabbed PC2 [move-eq action], moved the 10 ft to the wall [move action], dropped him on the other side of the wall [free action], then jumped the wall using the Hop Over option of the Jump skill [continuation of move action]. I allowed it to happen but now I'm having second thoughts and I'd like to establish the rules for the future.
1. Can you grab someone without entering their square? This would have eaten up 5 ft of movement and prevented PC1 from jumping the wall.
2. When you drop something as a free action, can it be of the sort "i extend my arms and then i drop it" or can it only drop down at your feet?

I think when you drop something it is considered to be in the same square as you are so You can't drop something in another square for a free action.

Also I think you need to move into a square to pick something up. Unless you have reach.

How did PC-2 affect PC-1 encumberance as far as movement oenalties and such?

Also I would count the grab a person as a grapple even if it is unresisted.

But to be honest if it made for a cool or funny scene let it happen anyways.

Of course that's a few DC's and a lot of movemen to do
DC to hop up cost 10 ft of movement
Dc 15 to hop down with out taking damage.

interesting to know how much movement they had and how far away from the wall they were and how much the PC-2 weighed and how strong PC-1 was.

I usually allowed a player to grab another one and drag him or carry him along (but considering encumbrance). Especially enlarged, this has become a nice tactic to get the wounded ones out of combat. Watch for AoOs.

Grabbing another person would be a grapple, even though unresisted. Grapples require you to enter a square.

"Dropping" an object is a free action: as in "I drop my sword", "I drop my shield", "I drop my pants and moon the king". Heaving a person up and over a 5' tall wall is not "dropping". I'd call that a move equivalent.

So, no, the PC could either:
A) Be standing next to the wall, holding the other PC and going to through him over next round

B) Be standing next to the wall with the PC next to him (having "dropped" the PC). The second PC could then hop over the wall on his own. (Though this is stretching it, if you allow this then your players will start doing the - Player A picks up Player B and move him 10', Player B then moves his normal movement trick. If this happens, beat them with a wet noodle.)

Where in the PHB is this? All I could find was a sentence saying you need to enter the opponent's square to maintain the grapple for later rounds. Knowing my players, they would argue that would not apply since PC1 was going to release PC2 in the same round.
