We made it through the last of the Tennant Episodes last night. It has been a while since I have seen those. The switch to HD is pretty impactful (there is that pre-HD haze over the screen of the first four or so seasons, which in some instances enhances viewing some it detracts). Some thoughts: I love the Timothy Dalton appearance as Rassilon. He has long been my favorite James Bond, I always like seeing him show up in character roles (he had one of the best in Hot Fuzz). Here he isn't on screen that much but he absorbs all of your attention. I feel like the End of Time is kind of odd in places as a finale. There are moments and scenes I like but the story didn't land as well overall as some of the other send outs. However I think dramatic moments work (though my wife did complain once or twice about the amount of drama: again this is her first time seeing the show). I also liked the chemistry between Wilf and the Doctor. The part where the master turns everyone human on the planet into himself has never felt right to me (something about it just raises too many questions in my head and disrupts my suspension of disbelief or something). This time around it was the same. I think it also makes earth feel incredibly small. This time around I noticed way more I, Claudius elements than before. Obviously there is Derek Jacobi as the master, but the stuff like the drum beats are right out of John Hurt's portrayal of Caligula. The masters look too. It is pretty apparent but didn't pick up on these the first time around. The Waters of Mars really holds up.
