does cheese go bad in a bag of holding?

My players are experimenting with a bag of holding that they recently found (they're sorta new players, and this is the first bag of holding for them... hehehe), and maybe a month ago game-time, they put a hunk of cheese in the bag of holding, and marked down a cheese-check-date when they wanted to pull it out again and see if it had gotten stinky. That date will roll around when we play tomorrow, and I haven't decided yet if food kept in a bag of holding stays better preserved than it would if it were in your regular pack. *8-)

What do you think? I'm sure there are no specific rules for this, so I'm looking to go with something that'll ultimately provide a few laughs. Maybe the time the cheese spends in the extra-dimensional space ages it in a way that can't happen in the real world, and they end up with a previously unknown variety of cheese!

I would say no

Simply because creative players will come up with uses for this power that I could never forsee. They'll start putting corpses of their allies in there (to replace the Gentle Repose spell). They'll start sleeping in there (in the hopes that time simply doesn't pass). They'll put huge blocks of ice in there (for some bizarre, unknown reason).

If you do decide that it keeps cheese fresh, I would recommend you think hard about why it does this. What's the metaphysick behind it? Does it stop time? Does it keep all things from rotting/decomposing/disintegrating? Does it keep things cool and dry? Or is it specially enchanted to keep cheese fresh? What kind of crazy schemes can the players come up with to abuse this (seemingly minor) power?

If you put cheese in a bag of holding with some cheese in it and a protected fire source (ie something that won't set the bag on fire from the inside)...the DMG states that a creature will suffocate in 10 minutes...thus the bag is air-tight...you can effectively vacuum seal the bag...thus preserving the cheese longer, but not indefinately.

Cool Question, I don't think this is too powerful, since a purify food and water cantrip will do the same or better

It will keep it airtight, but there's a good chance that bacteria will be in there also.

Do an experiment. Take some cheese, seal it in a bag, and leave it on the counter and see how long it lasts till it gets all fuzzy and your kid brother names it and takes it for walks. :D

If you're going for laughs/fun, let the cheese get stinky. Now, every time they open the bag, you can smell cheese gone bad (can't get rid of that smell). Even worse, now everything they put in the bag absorbs the cheesy smell, no matter how briefly it's in there. :D

I second this idea. As Spider pointed out, if you rule otherwise, you're opening yourself up to all sorts of cheesy tactics.

sorry

lol... that'd be funny. I might go with that, though not because I'm worried about the players exploiting the bag. I'd actually enjoy them coming up with something really weird to do with it. It's always fun for me as a DM when the players do unexpected things with something I've given them.

When they pull the hunk of cheese out it has a huge bite taken out of it.

I like this one too. *8-) It'd be fun to get them believing there's a strange critter living in their bag that samples the food they leave in it. I can see them experimenting for quite some time trying to figure out what it is and what kind of food it likes. Some food it could nearly devour, some food it could just nibble at, and some food it could disdain entirely.
