They give abilities to their weapons as they gain levels. Also Legends and Lairs has something exactly like what you are describing. I think it is in Spells and Spellcraft. Where you devote a number of experience points to a weapon and it can gain levels. Either you sacrafice exp for it or it gains exp itself.I personally like the idea. I find Legends and Lairs version decent enough. The prestige classes and such that provide weapon advancement I find don't always scale right with character level.
